Tee-time Tales

By Doc

Golfing weather is back with us again. The clubs have been polished up and the balls washed. The Dabchick Golf Society season got underway with a warm-up meeting at Shrivenham on April 14th.

Twenty-two keen, eager, optimistic players including five new members and a guest thronged around the first tee. Was this to be their day? Would all of the videos they got from Santa and the guaranteed to go-further-and-straighter golf balls do the trick? Inevitably fortunes were mixed but on the whole the society had wintered well and the overall standard showed a marked improvement.

For a change the meeting consisted of a team event as well as the usual individual competition. The team winners were ‘The Medics’ – David ‘Doc’ Watson, Vic Smith and Trevor Phillips playing his first ever 18 holes of golf. David took a clean sweep also winning the individual prize. Nick ‘The Logger’ Turk scooped a pool of £22 for nearest the pin. Special congratulations to Mark Evill who definitely had the longest drive of the day -240 miles from Cornwall just to take part!

The competitive season proper got underway at The Wiltshire, Wootton Bassett on May 12th. with the Spring Cup. Eighteen holes and 7 acres of lakes and streams awaited the intrepid competitors. Despite the complete lack of wind and near perfect conditions the course still managed to claim 54 wayward golf balls. Even though one individual (to remain nameless – Chris Paget knows who he is) completely ran out of ammunition, a good day was had by all. Not least the aforementioned David Watson who won the Cup and finished up within a foot of the hole at the thirteenth to take the money for nearest the pin. Paul Wordley and Paul Lott finished second and third, equal on points, Paul Wordley just sneaking second by virtue of a better second nine holes.

The day was rounded off with an excellent dinner from Chris and Mike at the Masons who also generously sponsored the Spring Cup Trophy. The inevitable post match banter went on late into the evening. Questions were raised in the (public) house about David Watson’s handicap. These have been referred to the handicap secretary – David Watson!
