The Midsummer Meeting of the Dabchick Golf Society was held under the blazing sun at Marlborough Golf Club on Thursday 13th. June. With the temperature soaring into the 80’s and the course in immaculate condition, everything was set for perfect day’s golf.
Twenty four players including four new members and two guests from as far afield as Leicester and Kent, teed off. The standard of play rose to the occasion with over half the field scoring better than 30 stableford points.
There were some outstanding performances. One of the guests, Russell Wadd visiting from Leicester scored an excellent 35 points, made the more creditable given that Russell has only been playing golf for six months. Matthew Reynolds produced an excellent performance over his home course scoring 38pts and finished third. Paul Wordley returned a stunning 40pts to finish second but, Vic Smith scorched the course to win the day with a staggering 42pts.
At the other end of the rankings, one of our new members, John Dymond, became the proud keeper of the ‘Broken Club’ for nightmare round of the day much to the relief of a couple of previous keepers of said trophy. David Watson once more won the nearest the pin competition, stopping his ball within six feet of the hole at the 14th.
The Society then moved to the Crown to slake its thirst en-mass and enjoy an excellent barbecue on a balmy summers evening – the perfect end to a perfect day.
Our remaining meetings for the season are at Erlstoke near Devizes on Sat. 31st. August and at Donnington on Sat. 12th. October and finally, the Christmas meeting at Shrivenham on Sun. 8th. December. If you would like to join in, please give Andrew Hunter a call on (01672) 541259.
